If woman is the giver of life, then man is the protector of life. In many cultures protection is linked to a military or warrior concept. The Senufo are mainly a peaceful people and the strength of their culture is widely respected. The greatest protection for a people is the respect they earn. The Senufo are strong, able, and courageous workers, and those qualities are celebrated and can also be applied for protection in the physical sense if needed. They are also respected for the peaceful way they can resolve disputes, and wise words and deeds are highly admired.

The values honored among men are cultural and spiritual, and their authority comes from their proofs in the world of work, as providers, and in good relations. The best model for a man is to embody the qualities of a chief. They hold their reputation as their wealth – earning a “good name” is of utmost importance.
The poro, which is the basis of the formation of man, touches on all these aspects. It is the school where the initiate learns the traditions, values and skills essential to all aspects of his role in society. This ensures the continuity of their life, work, culture and social order. In addition to learning the practical arts and the arts of the rites they perform during their celebrations, they also acquire a keen sense of service to their people. These are the main points of their identity in their role as adult Senufo men.
A model of governing by consensus

The men solve village problems by means of a communal palaver. A “palaver” is a group conversation and deliberation, using the traits of humility, empathy, consideration, and consensus that they value in all their social relationships. Absent are the confrontational methods familiar in the judicial systems in western industrialized countries. There are not accusations, debates, antagonism, guilt, or judgment.
The focus is on honesty, respect, and solutions. Each member of the palaver is a respected member of the community. In turn, all the members contribute to the account of the story giving blessings, summarizing what was spoken before, and contributing their point of view. Consensus is arrived at when the whole group speaks with one voice no matter how long it takes. If a final decision or judgement has to be made, the chief will make it, with a just solution agreed upon by all.
