
Most people view unfamiliar cultures through the prism of tourism, celebrations, and arts detached from everyday life. To people in industrialized countries, traditional indigenous cultures seem exotic or “primitive.” Taken out of context, what they see is simply a curiosity to them.
Senufo “literature” is everyday life. The basis of their work, social and spiritual beliefs are described, unified and supported through their arts and celebrations. These are real images that dramatize day-to-day relationships. These are the “books” that teach their culture to future generations. They are snapshots of reality.
I had the privilege of having experienced the meaning of the Senufo world. For me it was an intimate window into the hearts, the vivid impressions of all the senses, the sufferings and the challenges, the celebrations, the rhythm and the feelings of their lives, on their way from birth to death. They allowed and welcomed me to participate in all these essential elements of life.
This narrative of my impressions and understandings shows the values and beliefs that framed their Senufo identity. To me, it portrays a realistic view of what is dear to them. Far from being “exotic,” these images are universal, touching on the very nature of human life and psychology. They are images of a stable and eternal worldview brought to life by the spirits of woman, of man, and of all creatures, visible and invisible, bringing their energies and stories to life.
